AWARDS

3rd Plant & Marine Engineering Award

This award is open to all researchers or research laboratories from France
(University, CNRS, INRA…) and abroad.
The grant which is equivalent to 50 000 € covers the financing of a researcher
for a one-year period as well as the working cost of the laboratory due to his research.
The rules are available in word format (.doc). Just click
here.

Selection Criteria

The selection is based on scientific documents such as theses, publications
or reports realised by the researcher or the laboratory.
Various aspects will be also taken account for the selection of the award winner :
> The quality and the far-reaching of the scientific work
> The originality of the scientific reasoning
> The relation with the research of Secma Biotechnologies Marines
__and also with the development of research
> The contribution to the training of researchers

Topics

The purpose of the competition is mainly to enhance the research works
which have developed the following topics :
> Plant natural substances and seaweed substances
> Soil microbiology
> Plant physiology and biochemistry
> Plant nutrition
> Fertilisation (extensive crops, tree crops, viticulture, tropical crops,
__market gardening, floriculture)

Participation File

The following documents must be included in the participation file :
> Covering letter
> Candidate’s curriculum vitae

Award Winners, 2003

> Doctor Doan Trung Luu
> Doctor Christophe Maurel
" Laboratoire de biochimie et physiologie moléculaire des plantes "
UMR 5004 INRA / ENSAM / CNRS / Montpellier II University of Montpellier (France)
The laboratory studies both the behaviour of the plants faced with environmental
constraints, and also the relations between the structure and the function of
the ion carrier such as water canal protein or aquaporine.
The team of Doctor Luu and Doctor Maurel was rewarded for its research about
the functions and the regulations of the aquaporines of the plants and their
implications in the transport of water.
The results of this work was published in "Nature", one of the most famous
scientific magazine.

> Doctor Christine Rausch
> Doctor Marcel Bucher
" Group of Plant Biochemistry and Physiology "
Institute of Plant Sciences, Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Swiss)
The team of Doctor Rausch and Doctor Bucher studies the nutrition of the plant
and more precisely the phosphated nutrition of cultivated plants.
Its objective is both to improve the understanding of the swallowing mechanism
and the transport of phosphate through the plants and also to allow the transition
from an intensive agriculture to a reasoned agriculture.
In this context, the team of Doctor Bucher and Doctor Rausch was rewarded for
its work about molecular physiology of the phosphated nutrition which is precisely
notable during the acquisition mechanism and the transport of phosphate.
The results of this work permit among others the identification and the
characterisation of two phosphate carriers in potatoes.

Award Winners, 2002

> Doctor Stéphanie Cluzet
> Doctor Bernard Dumas
> Professor Marie-Thérèse Esquerré-Tugayé "
UMR 5546 CNRS / Paul Sabatier University of Toulouse (France)
The purpose of the laboratory is to determine the mechanism of the plants
to defend themselves, in order to protect them against diseases. Their strategies
are based on the use of advanced methods such as "genomic, proteomic,
bio-computing and biotechnology".
In this context, the team of Doctor Cluzet, Doctor Dumas and Professor Esquerré-Tugayé
(a national spokeswoman for the Academy of Agriculture) was rewarded for its research
about genomic and precisely the behaviour of various genes used for the defence
and the metabolism of agronomic plants.

> Doctor Stefano Mancuso
> Professor Maurizio Boselli
" Electrophysiology laboratory "
Horticulture department - University of Florence (Italy)
The team of Doctor Mancuso and Professor Boselli was rewarded for the creation
of a new technology allowing the observation of a vine with micro-electrodes and
more precisely, the swallowing of oxygen and mineral elements such as potassium.
This technology is a remarkable tool to apprehend the problems of potassic nutrition
of the vine.
The laboratory of Florence received also the First Prize by the Italian Academy
of Agriculture.
